2025620256Dormaalocyon (†Dormaalocyon latouri (Quinet, 1966))
Synonyms: Miacis latouri (Quinet, 1966)
Clade: Pan-Carnivora
Time period: lived in Europe during the early Eocene (55 million years ago)
Size: 1 kg of weight.
Dormaalocyon is an extinct member of placental mammals from clade Carnivoraformes, is one of the earliest ancestors of all modern-day carnivorous mammals. The type species, Dormaalocyon latouri, was discovered when fossils were unearthed in the village of Dormaal, near Zoutleeuw, in the Belgian province of Flemish Brabant.
The ankle bones suggest that Dormaalocyon latouri was a tree-dwelling mammal. Although close to the origin of carnivoraforms, the fossils suggest there were even more primitive species in the group in an earlier time period, the Paleocene.
