Mega Fauna Discovery Walk
Cooberrie Park Wildlife Sanctuary’s Mega Fauna Discovery Walk opened in September 2021 on the Capricorn Coast. The sanctuary’s megafauna exhibit is a walking attraction, to showcase Australian wildlife from over 30 thousand years ago.
Walking along the park's paths, you'll encounter the Diprotodon, a herbivorous giant wombat that was the size of an American bison. A little further afield you'll also find the giant short-faced kangaroo Procoptodon goliah, the so-called «marsupial tapir» Palorchestes, and one of the largest marsupial predators not only in Australia but in the world, the marsupial lion Thylacoleo.
Children especially love the giant lizard Megalania, which is great for posing for photos with its mouth open. All of the above and many other animals of the Australian megafauna are made full-grown figures based on our reconstructions.
«Education has always been a major driving force behind the longevity of the park and the new education area is the Mega Fauna Discovery Walk which allows visitors to step back in time and explore life size recreation of Mammals and Birds that existed around 30 thousand years ago», – that's how Cooberrie Park team members describe this project. – «All of the Mega Fauna Displays are life size recreations and all are Australian based with a vast majority from fossils found in the Riversleigh area of Queensland».
Cooberrie Park Wildlife Sanctuary wildlife ranger Keiron Smedley said the Mega Fauna Discovery Walk has been a hit with visitors since the opening day.
