1000000002210000000022Arctodus simus, known as the short-faced bear, was one of the most formidable beasts of the Ice Age in North America (its name means «bear tooth»).
Towering over other predators, it could stand over 3.5 meters (11 feet) tall on its hind legs. Despite its fearsome fangs and powerful jaws, scientists now believe it was more of a giant opportunist, scavenging carcasses and eating plants when prey was scarce.
With its long legs built for covering vast distances, it likely intimidated dire wolves and saber-toothed cats, stealing their kills. Surprisingly, its closest living relative is the much smaller spectacled bear of South America.
