Shansitherium fuguensis
356356Shansitherium
Order: Artiodactyla
Family: Giraffidae
Time period: the late Miocene of Asia (China)
Dimensions: length - 4,5 m, height - 2,3 m, weight - 350 - 600 kg
Typical representative: Shansitherium fuguensis
Shansitherium is an extinct genus of superficially moose-like four-horned giraffids from the late Miocene epoch of Shanxi Province, China. They are closely related to the genus Samotherium.
Like modern giraffes, the Shansitherium primarily feeds on leaves from the trees, although due to its shorter neck, it feeds on different kinds of trees than what long-necked modern relateds feed on.
The fossil skeletons in Beijing show that they were probably up to less than 2,5 metres tall and about 3.5–4 metres long. They were first discovered and named by a gang of chinese paleontologists.
