Вряд ли. Основной добычей смилодона был лесной бизон. А львы, как и их современные потомки предпочитали верблюдов, лошадей и оленей. Поэтому у них и телосложение разное. Смилодон коренастый, потому что ему приходилось валить бизона, после чего он закалывал его своими клыками-кинжалами. А лев догоняет и душит, про это столько документальных фильмов снято.

Их ниши пересекались. Добыча была практически идентична. Просто львы пришли в царство смилодонов и стали их сдвигать к югу.

Ужасающе натурально! Ром, а как эти монстры могли уживаться в одной экосистеме? Или у них экологические ниши были разными? Или они пересекались эпизодически?

Great work! I wonder, perhaps a smilodon wouldn't want to fight with a lion for long - it would be afraid of its fangs breaking. It couldn't bite the lion, because the lion would be moving and struggling and that would cause lateral pressure that could break the fangs. So perhaps a smilodon would at best try to intimidate a lion and slap it with its paws? Just some thoughts!
