Gomphotaria pugnax was a species of very large shellfish-eating dusignathine walrus found along the coast of what is now California, during the late Miocene. It had four tusks, with one pair in the lower and upper jaws, and according to wear on the tusks, G. pugnax hammered shellfish open, rather than simply sucking them out of their shells as do modern walruses. In terms of the postcranial skeleton, Gomphotaria and other dusignathine walruses were built more like sea lions than modern walrus. Gomphotaria is a prime example of the extreme diversity that walruses once exhibited.

Роман Станиславович, это чудесная реконструкция! В миоцен-плиоценовое время этих моржей вообще с десяток родов было - всякие дусигнатусы, имаготарии, аивукусы, протодобенусы... И все локализовались в Северной Пацифике от Калифорнии (видимо колыбели?) до Японии... Правда один ушлый род проник далеко на восток (я не оговорился!) -через тогда Панамский пролив из Пацифики в Атлантику, в Карибский бассейн, через
Атлантику, в Средиземное море, Босфор, Черное море и даже вроде в Каспии водился во времена гиппариона... Это кажется Alahtherium или Ontocetus (по-новому названию).... Вот бы ты изваял этого карибско-средиземного моржа....Вроде он по экстерьеру чем-то на сивуча смахивал, а вот клыки у него были меньше и круче изогнуты, чем у современных моржей....И даже вроде какая-то атласная ворсистая шкурка имелась вроде как у морских котиков и сивучей.... На северных побережьях Атлантики он вроде до Каролины и Британии добирался, на южных - до Карибских островов и Марокко в Африке....
