Bison (Eobison) georgicus
202113202113Bison is one of the most important and successful large mammals to spread in Europe at the latest stages of the Early Pleistocene.
Bison (Eobison) georgicus from Dmanisi (Georgia) is putatively the earliest Bison approaching Europe at ca. 1.77 Ma. From the late Villafranchian on, a large number of localities in Mediterranean and Eastern Europe are characterized by the presence of these mid-sized bison-like bovids, still commonly grouped in the subgenus Eobison. After 1.2 Ma (i.e., at the beginning of the Epivillafranchian stage), with the onset of new climatic conditions in the context of the Early-Middle Pleistocene Transition, Eobison was replaced by the larger-sized Bison schoetensacki, B. menneri, and B. priscus, in chronological order of appearance), which rapidly colonized most of the Holarctic.
